The Open University - 60-Second Adventures in Thought

The Open University strikes again. In June, they released The History of English, a series of witty animated videos that covered 1600 years of linguistic history in ten minutes. Now, they’re back with 60-Second Adventures in Thought, another animated sequence that highlights six famous thought experiments. It all starts with Zeno’s ancient Paradox of the Tortoise and Achilles. (Watch above.) Then we head straight to the 20th century, to five famous thought experiments in physics, math and computer science.

Philip Roth and Paul Auster - Death of the Novel

Novels — they’re in inevitable decline. They can’t compete with the movie screen, the TV screen and now the computer screen. Give things 25 years, and there will be just a small cult of readers left. That’s the prediction of American author, Philip Roth, who has 27 novels to his credit. And apparently, Roth is personally hastening the process. Earlier this year, he told a reporter for the Financial Times: “I’ve stopped reading fiction. I don’t read it at all. I read other things: history, biography. I don’t have the same interest in fiction that I once did.” When asked why, he quipped: “I don’t know. I wised up … ”



For Paul Auster, another productive novelist, the reports of the novel’s death are greatly exaggerated. Humans hunger for stories. They always will. And, the novel, it knows how to adapt and survive. Will it survive with the help of technology? Auster might not be the best person to ask. He owns neither a computer nor a mobile phone. Lucky man.

Twitter Redesigned Timeline

Patrick Bisch from Pinglio reports on the updated twitter timeline.

It seems Twitter is quietly rolling out a much-needed update to its Timeline feature. The new Timeline allows users to click individual tweets to expand conversations, media, and RTs. Alternatively, when hovering over a tweet, an Open link appears and can be clicked to expanding the tweet. Once opened, aClose link appears to close the expanded tweet. There haven’t  been seen any official word on this from the official Twitter account or theirblog, but a few users are reporting it.

Gotham Font

Gotham is a family of geometric sans-serif digital typefaces designed by American type designer Tobias Frere-Jones in 2000. Gotham's letterforms are inspired by a form of architectural signage that achieved popularity in the mid-twentieth century, and are especially popular throughout New York City.^[1]

Since creation, Gotham has been highly visible due to its appearance in many notable places, including a large amount of campaign material created for Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign, as well as the cornerstone of the One World Trade Center, the tower to be built on the site of the former World Trade Center in New York.

WTK Photography was started in 2007. Documentary photographer Wesley Townsend Kitten has experience in wedding photography, engagement photography, family portraits, senior portraits, modeling photography, and event photography. Wesley has attended both Brooks Institute of Photography and Academy of Art University for documentary photography. He has worked for a talent agency shooting head shots and modeling shots. For two summers, he served as the documentary photographer for a nonprofit inner city home repair organization in Memphis, TN. He was the staff photographer for Vetted Word, a creative community of poets, writers, and musicians in San Francisco, CA. Wesley currently lives in Waco, TX.

This timelapse is about a year in the making. I started sometime in June of 2010 and finished it on August 19, 2011. It wasn't constant work of course, just working on it every now and then. I'd estimate I have invested anywhere between 250 and 300 hours on it. Most of this was time I spent walking, biking, or riding the bus to locations I was shooting. There are very few locations I used a car to get to. Total frame count is about 28,000 frames and 85 different shots. All the frames weren't used in the final product as I edited down the clips. You will notice that some of the shots were shaky. San Francisco is a very windy city and even my heavy tripod couldn't remain still. In hindsight I should have bought a different head. All photos were shot in JPEG and then some light editing in Lightroom. Compiled into .mov clips in Quicktime Pro and then all brought together in Final Cut Pro.
I started this project because there are so many people photographing the city that I wanted to capture it in a different way that most were not. Between the time I started and the time I finished, timelapses have become huge. It's amazing to see what fellow artists can make with even the most basic equipment.

Alcinoo - Morning Frames

Alcinoo is the screen-name of Nicola Destefanis, the director for motion and digital design. "Morning Frames" is a sort of google aerial + street view video combination, but for real.

Gustav Johansson - EF Live The Language

Gustav started his directing career around 15 years ago in Sweden, making his own edits on his father’s 2-channel VHS- editor. He invented his own groundbreaking style by cutting Disney movies together with Hockey games and turning them into movie trailers. This revolutionary way of handling moving image and visual storytelling attracted interest and all of a sudden Uppsala seemed a bit too small for Gustav. Although only 25 years old, Gustav has already collected awards like: 1st prize at the Cannes Young Directors Awards, Winner of the Cannes Future Lions, named “Young Gun Of the month”, Gold at the One Show and the Clios.
